Noravank Monastery

Foundation: 13th century

Location: Vayots Dzor province, near Yeghegnadzor town in the gorge of Amaghu River

Distance from Yerevan: 122 km

Noravank monastery was founded in 1205 by Bishop Hovhannes and was the residence of the Orbelian princes.

The Complex:

  • St. Karapet church, 9th century basilica that is in ruins, the oldest structure in the complex;
  • St. Stepanos church, 1216-1221, consists of Gavit and the main church;
  • St. Grigor mausoleum-chapel, was built by the architect Siranes in 1275. The church floor is paved with ten large stones marking the graves of members of Elikum's family;
  • St. Astvatsatsin Burtelashen church, a three story building built by the 14th century artist, sculptor and architect Momik as Orbelian family sepulcher;
  • Khachkars, including masterpiecess by Momik and his students that are considered to be among the best Armenian carvings of the medieval period.
