Horomayr Monastery

Foundation: 7th century, the main church was built in 1187

Location: Lori Province

Distance from Yerevan:  170km / 3 hours

The monastery used to be an important medieval religious center, located on cliffs in south-east of the Odzun village, with an amazing view of Debed River Gorge.

The complex:

  • St. Nshan Church, built in 1187 by the Princes Zakare and Ivane Zakarian, the bell tower was built in 1290
  • Tsiranavor-Tsaghkevank (4-5th centuries) and single-nave churches
  • Small chapel built in 1201
  • Zhamatun or belfry (adjacent to the church, 1301)
  • Ruins of St. Arakyal chapel (1216)
  • The cemetery.
